THE HANSON- LARSEN MEMORIAL PARK (HLMP) STORY

The land popularly known as "M Hill" or "Cowboy Hill" in the heart of Rapid City, SD has undergone a total transformation since its purchase by the Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park Foundation three years ago. The private, non-profit Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park Foundation has built over 8 miles of world class hiking and biking recreational trails on 300 acres of pristine Black Hills wilderness near Rapid City's historic downtown district. Read more »

Races

Cowboy Hill Sprint Climb

New 2010 course! This race may be one of the shortest, fastest, and toughest challenges in the Mountain Bike world today. The Cowboy Hill Sprint Climb is not for the faint of heart. (In fact, if you have any kind of heart condition stay away!) For the faster riders this is 8-14 minutes of sheer hell. For the slower riders it is 2.5 miles of purgatory. Completing this race will be something to look forward to. Putting it out of your mind will never happen.

Time: 11:00 a.m. Check In | 11:30 p.m. Race Start
Day: Saturday, May 29, 2010
Location: Founders Park (Cowboy Hill gate)
Must pick up Race packet before 11:00 a.m.

X-Country

New 2010 course! The 2009 BHFTF X-country race will be held on Cowboy Hill in the newly developed Hanson/Larsen Memorial Park. We can guarantee you that the new trails will make this race all the more fun. Expert riders can expect a race of around 24 miles and sport riders will be racing between 15-20 miles. This is going to be an extremely fast course.

Time: 10:00 a.m. Check In | 10:30 a.m. Race Start
Day: Sunday, May 30, 2010
Location: Race starts/ends at Cowboy Hill Gate

Super D

New 2010 course! The BHFTF Super D race is best described as a downhill cross-country race. It lacks the technical danger of the downhill and has some significant pedaling. The Super D is an individual timed event 2.5 miles long. This is a great event a lot of people can enjoy. There isn't a whole lot of climbing so you don't have to be in great shape, although it doesn't hurt, and you don't need a $4,000.00 downhill bike to make it down. Any bike will do for this Super D race. However, the all-mountain/trail bikes with 4, 5, and 6 inches of travel can really excel. If you're thinking about getting into racing, but you think you might lack the endurance required for a typical XC race, The Super D is a great place to start. For Experts this race is also part of the King/Queen of the Hills series.

Time: 9:00 a.m. Check In | 9:30 a.m. Race Start
Day: Saturday, May 29, 2010
Location: Founders Park (Cowboy Hill gate)
Must pick up Race Packet before 9:00 a.m.
Shuttle Included on race day!

Dirk's Draw Downhill Race (New in 2010)

We are excited to announce the addition of the first annual Dirk's Draw Downhill Race to this year's Black Hills Fat Tire Festival. At just under 1000 vertical feet, this newly constructed IMBA trail runs from the tower ridge summit to the base of Cowboy Hill incorporating drops, jumps, rocks, and technical sections. Whether you are in-it-to-win-it or compete with your friends for bragging rights, the Dirk's Draw downhill course on Hansen-Larsen Memorial Park offers a great venue for racers and spectators alike.

Once again we will be participating in the fun of the Black Hills Fat Tire Festival with a trail race on the "Hill". We will be finalizing the 2010 course later this spring as more trails are in the works! We will also be using the great new trails added and/or upgraded this past year for a completely new course. The trails are great for all abilities - from the novice to experienced trail runner. The FTTC race is part of our second annual Black Hills Trail Running Series. Check out the 2010 Series at www.bhrctrails.com

The course will be approximately 4 miles in distance. We have a cut-off time of 10:00 a.m. so the course is hiker/walker friendly! The XC MTB race will be starting at 10:30 so stay for the excitement and enjoy the Black Hills Fat Tire Festival!

Rapids Triathlon

As we begin a new decade with this year, it is fitting to usher out the old and bring in something entirely new to the 2010 Festival. That's why we developed the "Rapids Triathlon". The Rapids Triathlon will include mountain biking, running and kayaking.

Participants will mountain bike 4.5 miles, run 3.8 miles and kayak 1 mile along Rapid Creek. This should be a fun and exciting demo sport at the festival. You can participate even if you don't have a kayak by entering the lazy man’s division. The lazy man triathlon will mountain bike and run the same course but will use inner tubes to get down Rapid Creek.

The triathlon will end at the Executive Golf Course right before the start of the Sunday evening barbeque and awards. Should be an exciting time for all.
