It's no secret that the Black Hills harbors some of the premier mountain bike trails on the planet. But what else would you expect in a state where thousands of miles of trails and dirt roads crisscross the 1.7 million acres of National Forest other than premium rides? Many people come and never see the legendary trails that the Black Hills holds, but the tragedy is, most people set off on one of the many day trips they find in an old book somewhere. Those rides, as great as they are, plunk you back at the car way too quickly. For experienced bikers with a yen to see the sights a rare treasure can be found in these the Black Hills, the Mickelson Trail!
This 109 mile trail flows right through the heart of the Black Hills. It follows an abandoned railroad bed, and climbs gently into jagged cliffs and pine forests. The Mickelson Trail has a crushed limestone surface and wide path. It tops out at 6,100 feet but never exceeds a 4-percent grade (making it perfect for leisure riders). Trestle bridges and railroad tunnels add to the trail’s charm.
This two day (Friday, May 23rd & Saturday May 24th) ride will begin in Deadwood and end in Edgemont. The first day will be a ride of 48 miles from Deadwood to Hill City. The second day we will start in Hill City and continue 61 miles into the town of Edgemont.
